About Payel
Payel specialise in cross-border commercial arbitration and litigation, investigation, investment treaty arbitration, and public international law. She has worked as counsel under ICSID, PCA, SIAC, LCIA, HKIAC, ICC, UNCITRAL, ECT, DIAC, ADCCAC, LCIA and ad hoc arbitration frameworks across different jurisdictions such as England, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, The Hague, Singapore, Hong Kong, Paris, Vienna, Brazil, and New York etc. These matters have involved a broad range of sectors including defence, oil and gas, energy, commodities, banking and finance, manufacture, licensing, service, shareholder disputes, infrastructure, and engineering. She aslo provides strategic advice to clients on all contractual and commercial issues, compliance and regulatory matters, and litigious risks and strategies for avoidance of dispute resolution. She has been involved in successful negotiations and mediation (both pre-dispute and during ongoing disputes).
She has acted for clients in proceedings arising out of general commercial, corporate, bankruptcy and financial disputes before the DIFC, ADGM, Singapore Courts, Indian Courts, and before international courts and tribunals including on human rights issues before the ECtHR (European Court of Human Rights). She has worked as legal advisor and/or research assistant for BRIC Nations, the Commonwealth Secretariat, Governments of Fiji, Honduras and Somalia on arbitration matters (including drafting of legislation), competition law, international law of the sea, and international dispute settlement. Her practice also focuses on on tackling setting aside and enforcement of foreign and domestic awards in the UAE, India and England. She has been involved in advisory work on complex issues of UAE law such as those of good faith, abuse of rights, unjust enrichment, notice requirements, damages, liquidated damages, concurrent delays, reciprocal obligations, interest, public policy, public order, retroactivity, limitation, conflict of offshore and onshore UAE laws etc.
Alongside her counsel work, she has taught international dispute settlement, international investment law and international arbitration at the Higher School of Economics at Moscow. Recently, she won the ROAP EMEA Construction Arbitration Advocacy conducted by Delos and is currently selected as the Ambassador for Delos Advocacy 2024-2025. She aslo publishes on various issues of law in which I practice including arbitration, commercial matters and projects and infrastructure.

- Successfully representing a semi-governmental defence entity in defending a USD 150 million claim pursuant to ADCCAC rules.
- Advising an Indian Bank in ADGM proceedings arising out of one of the biggest forced administrations in the history of UAE.
- Representing an investment fund against an international Singaporean bank, the dispute arising out of structured notes and derivatives.
